Privacy Policy

The short version. Tandem only listens during a live session that everyone in the room has agreed to on their own phone. Audio never leaves your phone and is never saved. The words of a live conversation are deleted when the session ends. We never sell your data.

What we collect

Account: your first name, email address and password (stored securely by Google Firebase Authentication), and your age (stored as a birth year, shown to your circle, and used by the coach).
Communication profile: your quiz answers, summarized as a few scores. Shared with people in your circle so they know how to talk with you.
Circle: who is in your couple or family circle, and its invite code.
Messages you send in Tandem, visible to your circle.
Live sessions: who took part, when each person agreed, and talk time. While a session is live, each phone turns its owner's speech into text on the device and shares those lines with the other participants' phones through our servers; they are deleted when the session ends (and automatically within 24 hours if anything fails).
Private notes: summaries you choose to keep, reflections, workbook answers and post-conversation check-ins. Only you can see these.

How the AI coach works

To give feedback, Tandem sends the relevant text (for example a message draft, or recent lines of a live conversation) and the communication profiles involved to Anthropic's Claude API, which processes it to produce the coaching and returns it. Audio is never sent. Anthropic processes this data on our behalf under its commercial terms and does not use it to train its models.

"Help improve Tandem" (optional, off by default)

If you turn this on in Me → Help improve Tandem, we keep anonymized examples of coaching and how it went (for example whether you used a suggested rewrite, or how you felt after a conversation) to evaluate and improve Tandem's coaching. Before storage we remove names, email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, places, workplaces and other identifiers, and we do not store your account ID or exact times with them. You can turn this off at any time; examples already stored are anonymized and cannot be linked back to you.

What we don't do

We don't record or store audio.
We don't sell or rent personal data, or use it for advertising.
We don't share your private notes or check-ins with your partner or family.

Service providers

Google Firebase (accounts, database, hosting, servers in the United States) and Anthropic (AI processing). Push notifications are delivered through Expo's notification service and Apple or Google.

Keeping and deleting data

We keep your data while your account is active. You can delete your account at any time in Me → Delete account; this permanently deletes your account, profile, private notes and check-ins. If you are the last member of a circle, the circle and its messages are deleted too.

Safety

If the coach detects signs that someone may be in danger, it shows support resources instead of communication advice. Tandem does not contact anyone on your behalf.

Children

Tandem is for adults, and for teens aged 13 to 17 who join a family circle with a parent or guardian in it. A parent or guardian in the circle confirms a teen's age. For teens we collect the same account and coaching data as for adults, and we never use a teen's data for training, even if the setting is changed. Tandem is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them; if you believe a child under 13 has an account, contact us and we will delete it.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (including California and the EU/UK), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or export your data. You can do most of this in the app; for anything else, contact us.
